Children of the World/ Boston : Children of the World / Boston is the beginning of a story about children of immigrant families who live in Boston.
I live two lives as a social worker and a photographer. Social work and making portraits have a common theme – in their essence they are both about the relationship between two people. I am succeeding when I am allowed in to the world of the family, and a sacred trust is built.
I meet immigrant families every day at work. I love being with children and sharing the reality of how they experience the world. I am moved by the joys and struggles of their parents who are navigating life in a new country on top of the complex challenges that all parents face. Increasingly, I walk through my own city and see the world everywhere I look.

Several years ago I discovered Danny Goldfield’s project, NYChildren. He is photographing one child from every country in the world, all living in New York City -- a magnificent idea.
I realized Children of the World | Boston would bring my two lives together, sharing the images and the stories. I ask the parents and children to talk about their identities as immigrants. “How do you hold on to the culture of your home country, the language and customs? What does it mean to be American?” One 4 year-old girl replied, “I’m Mexican AND Bostonian!” A 12 year-old boy said, “I was born in America, but my parents are from the Caribbean. I’m American by citizenship, but ‘American’ is just a label… my blood is from Dominica.”
As of November 2012, there are 40 countries represented. My goal is to photograph children from at least 100 countries. The project is ongoing, and the story continues.

STILL SEEKING BOSTON FAMILIES with children (under age 12), from all over the world! Either the parents or the child must have been born in another country. Each family will receive an 8x10 high quality print.
COUNTRIES already represented include: Austria, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Burma (Myanmar), Canada, Cape Verde, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Dominica, Dominican Prepublic, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Tibet, Trinidad & Tobago, and Vietnam.
